Wearing a cape made from cotton and a jacket that is red in colour, the young shepherdess - probably a figure representing Miller's own daughter is standing in front of a flock of sheep that she is tending. While standing in front of her flock, she goes on with knitting and keeps looking down at the what is making. In an unchanging landscape extending, unbound, to the horizon, she appears lonely with the flock of sheep is tending. The flock of sheep creates a patch of smoothly rising and falling light, that reflects the bright rays of the disappearing sun. Jean-Francois Millet relocated and settled in Barbizon town in the year 1849, and he was born and raised in a farming family. He was later trained how to paint by another painter in Paris. Having acquired the skill of painting, Millet spent most of his early days in his painting career, creating nude and erotic portraits. He was also influenced by the evolution brought by the rise in industrialization as well as urbanization. Later, Millet started painting pictures with scenes of peasants farming, furnishing them with heroic form acquired from historical artistry. Due to his new style and choice of painting peasant farmers, who political conservatives of the time perceived to be disruptive in the community, Millet was politically attacked and praised in equal measure.
